B-roll & Stock

Runway

Cloud generative video suite (Gen-4.5, Aleph 2.0, and other models) that turns text or images into custom clips you can use as faceless B-roll instead of repeating stock libraries.

What it is

Runway (runway.com) is a cloud creative suite for generating and editing video, images, and audio with AI models. The faceless B-roll job is the generative path: prompt (or image) in, short clip out, then drop that clip over a voiceover in CapCut, VEED, or any timeline you already use.

Flagship models named on official pages include Gen-4.5 (text-to-video / image-to-video generation) and Aleph 2.0 (in-context video editing in Edit Studio: change one frame or describe a local edit, and the model updates the rest while preserving what you did not ask to change). The product surface also lists other models and apps (for example Seedance, Kling, Nano Banana, Veo 3.1 on pricing copy; Remove Object, Upscale Video, Change Background, and similar Apps on the product page). Runway Agent is positioned for conversational end-to-end video creation. Runway Creative is the creator product; Dev and Robotics are separate surfaces and are not this listing.

It is not Pexels or Pixabay. Those are free stock libraries of filmed clips everyone can download. Runway invents or edits footage from prompts and credits. It is not InVideo. InVideo Autopilot leans stock-plus-voice from a brief. Runway’s core pitch here is generative clip quality, not a stock Autopilot channel. It is not CapCut or VEED. Those are timelines you drive shot by shot; Runway generates or AI-edits the shot, then you usually finish elsewhere (official plan help even notes the built-in video editor is no longer actively maintained for large projects). It is not HeyGen. HeyGen’s hook is a lip-synced AI presenter. Runway’s hook for this lane is custom generative B-roll and generative edits, not an on-screen avatar twin.

Official homepage positioning: Creative Suite for individuals and teams; “Try free, cancel anytime”; claims “60m+ creatives.” Research page for Gen-4.5 (Dec 1, 2025) claims frontier motion quality, prompt adherence, and visual fidelity, and cites Artificial Analysis Text-to-Video leaderboard numbers at release. Official Gen-4.5 post also lists common model limits (causal reasoning, object permanence, success bias).

Who it’s for

Use it if your faceless format needs B-roll that stock search cannot find—specific product moments, surreal or niche scenes, restyled coverage, or prompt-built inserts that keep a channel from recycling the same Pexels sunset. Official paths that fit: (1) Gen-4.5 text or image to short video for coverage; (2) Aleph 2.0 / Edit Studio to change an existing clip (product color, background, remove object, seasonal variant) up to 30s at 1080p on paid plans; (3) Apps like Upscale Video or Remove Object when you already have a base clip; (4) paid plans when you need no watermark and access to the full model list.

Skip Free as a publishing plan. Official Free help: every Free video gets a Runway watermark; Free has a limited model set that can change; credits are a one-time 125 deposit with no purchase path until you upgrade. Skip Runway if silent stock coverage is enough (Pexels, Pixabay). Skip it if you only need a talking avatar (HeyGen), voice only (ElevenLabs), captions on finished footage (Submagic), or long-to-shorts (Opus Clip). Skip Characters / real-time video agents if you only publish finished YouTube or TikTok files.

Credit math is the real gate. Official pricing examples: Standard’s 625 credits ≈ 52 seconds of Gen-4.5, or about 104 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo, or 78 Gen-4 Images at 1080p. Pro’s 2,250 credits ≈ 187s Gen-4.5. A single 5-second Gen-4.5 clip is 60 credits; a 5-second Aleph 2.0 edit is 140 credits. Heavy Shorts volume burns a Standard allotment fast.

Standout details

  • Plans (official pricing page + schema.org offers + Free plan help): Free ($0, 125 one-time credits), Standard ($15/mo monthly list / $12/mo yearly), Pro ($35 / $28 yearly), Max ($95 / $76 yearly), Enterprise (sales). Yearly cards advertise ~20% off and dollar savings ($36 / $84 / $228 per year).
  • Credits (pricing FAQ + credits help): Gen-4.5 = 12 credits per second (60 credits per 5s on the comparison table). Aleph 2.0 = 140 credits per 5s. Seedance 2.0 Pro 1080p = 160 credits per 4s; Seedance 2.0 Fast = 116 credits per 4s. Free deposit does not expire. Standard/Pro monthly allotments reset near the billing date and do not roll over. Max can roll over up to one month of unused credits. Purchased packs (min 1,000) never expire; Free cannot buy packs.
  • Watermark (Free plan help + Standard pricing card): Free generations are watermarked. Standard and above list no watermarks.
  • Export / resolution (plan help + pricing cards): Plan help states videos are generated in SD and can be upscaled to 4K in a Generative Session. Standard card lists 4K Upscaling. Pro/Max cards call out Topaz AI Upscale. Max adds studio-grade formats (ProRes, image sequences) and HDR generations (up to 16-bit). Editor composition exports: Standard up to 4K; Pro/Max add ProRes and PNG sequences (plan help).
  • Models and Edit Studio (product, research, Aleph pages + news): Gen-4.5 for generation; Aleph 2.0 for localized video edits with image preview before generate; news states Aleph 2.0 in Edit Studio is on all paid desktop web plans. Pricing comparison also lists third-party and partner models (e.g. Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1, Seedance, Nano Banana, audio models including Seed Audio and Lyria on the table).
  • Commercial use (official Usage rights help): As between you and Runway, you retain ownership of uploads and generations on Free, Standard, Pro, Max, or Unlimited. Official FAQ says commercial use is allowed without non-commercial restriction from Runway, including monetized YouTube, Reels, TikTok, ads, and festivals. No formal credit to Runway is required.
  • Workspace note (plan help): Credits are shared per workspace, not multiplied per editor. Extra editors are billed per seat (Standard up to 5 editors at $15/mo or $144/yr each; Pro up to 10 at $35/mo or $336/yr; Max up to 10 at $95/mo or $912/yr).
  • Unlimited → Max (plan help notice): Max replaces Unlimited for new subscribers (from May 29, 2026); Unlimited accounts switch to Max on September 1, 2026 per that notice.

Honest verdict

Try it. Runway earns the b-roll slot when stock libraries feel exhausted and you need prompt-built or AI-edited clips that match a niche script. Start on Free only to feel Gen-4.5 and the credit meter; do not publish Free exports (watermark). Move to Standard when you need no watermark, full model access, and a monthly 625-credit pool. Stay on Standard if a few custom inserts per episode are enough. Move to Pro when audio tools, higher monthly volume (~187s Gen-4.5 equivalent), or Topaz upscale matter. Max is for heavy generators who want rollover, ProRes/HDR paths, and 9,500 credits—not the default for a solo Shorts grind.

Do not buy Runway to replace tools that already solve a narrower job. Free stock coverage is Pexels or Pixabay. Stock-plus-voice drafts are InVideo. Avatar presenters are HeyGen. Timeline assembly is CapCut or VEED. Captions-on-footage is Submagic. Re-check runway.com/pricing and the in-product credit estimate before you subscribe; seconds of Gen-4.5 and Aleph 2.0 are the real monthly cost, not only the sticker price.
